You have just upgraded your theme and you get this error: Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance…check back soon. But it’s been over an hour already and still you see no website.
Normally, this type of error would be fixed automatically because as the message suggests…it is busy updating your WordPress website theme and that it would be ready shortly.
But if you are one of the lucky ones to get this error, don’t stress, these solutions will help.
When WordPress updates, it automatically installs a
.maintenance file on your server. Following the update/upgrade, you may receive a message that says “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Please check back in a minute.” Right, right, we know that already.
It should resolve itself in roughly twenty (20) minutes without your having to do anything. This all depends on your WordPress website theme size and the internet speed that you have (not that old dial-up modem that you are so fond of).
But if this error still persists, then it’s time to pull out the chainsaw and lay your computer to rest. No, don’t do that. It just means that the maintenance file may not have been removed properly from your server. WordPress automatically delete the maintenance file, associated with the update, from your server.
To remove this persistent error message from your site, do the following:
- Log in to your website server using your FTP program or simply just log into cPanel or Plesk or whatever you use.
- Go to your public_html folder where you website would normally be (your domain root folder)
- Find and Delete the
- Simply wait for the update/upgrade to complete automatically. This will be less stressful when you update/upgrade in the evening when most of your visitors are asleep, or less frequent on your site.
- Find and delete the
.maintenancefile in the domain root folder.
- Refresh your website and watch the magic.
